Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes attributed with magical powers or associated with the legitimate sovereignty of Great Britain. The sword was associated very early with Arthurian legend. In Welsh the sword is called caledfwlch; in Cornwall the sword is called calesvol; in Breton the sword is called kaledvoulc'h; in Latin the sword is called caliburnus. The history and legend of King Arthur is closely linked to the magical and mysterious sword Excalibur. As the wizard Merlin proclaimed, only he who could pull the sword from the stone would be king. Arthur, kneeling before the stone, performed this act, took the sword, entered the cathedral with it and sacrificed it on the altar. Arthur was anointed with the holy oil and, in the presence of all the barons and common people, he solemnly swore to be a just king and to defend truth and justice all the days of his life. Legend and history have intertwined over time, and the legend of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table and the magic sword Excalibur have become intertwined along the way.
