Although basket-handled swords had been widespread throughout England since the mid-16th century, they only became popular through their association with the Scottish Highlanders, legendary fighters of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Paul Chen Basket-Hilt Sabre by Hanwei, a replica of an original sword in the collection of the British Royal Armories , features a typical mid-18th-century Glasgow-style vessel. The blade of the original sword (marked Andrea Ferara) was most likely made in Germany a century earlier and then fitted with a more contemporary basket-hilt handle.
This replica was a vintage knife. The patina of its easy-care stainless steel basket is museum-quality. The carbon steel blade has also been lightly distressed for an authentic look. The handle is made of genuine ray skin with wire wrapping, and the bowl is lined with fabric-covered leather. A leather-covered sheath is included.
