although basket-hilt swords had been widespread throughout england since the mid-16th century, they only became popular through their association with the scottish highlander, legendary fighters of the 17th and 18th centuries. the hanwei paul chen basket-hilt sabre, a replica of an original sword in the collection of the british royal armories , features a typical mid-18th-century glasgow-style hilt. the blade of the original sword (marked andrea ferara) was most likely made in germany a century earlier and then fitted with a more contemporary basket-hilt handle.

This replica was antique. The patina on its easy-care stainless steel basket is museum quality. The carbon steel blade has also been lightly distressed to give it an authentic look. The handle is made of genuine wire-wrapped stingray skin and the bowl is lined with fabric-covered leather. A leather-covered sheath is included.
