Gift Sword of the River Witham
Sword of the river witham
The original sword was found in 1788 during earthworks on the River Witham near Lincoln (eastern England). It probably dates back to the second half of the 13th century. The blade is made of carbon steel (AISI 1566) and is sharpened. The following inscription is engraved on the blade: +ndxoxchmdrchdxorvi+ .
The steel of the blade reaches all the way to the end of the handle and is riveted to the pommel there. This sword cannot be called a decorative sword, as it can definitely be used for fencing. However, the blade is sharp. It is an ideal weapon for reenactors who want to have a sword like before. The sword comes with a leather-covered wooden scabbard.
