Edward of Woodstock (1330 – 1376), called the Black Prince, was the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainaut and the father of King Richard II of England. He was the first Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Wales, and Prince of Aquitaine. In his early life he was called Edward of Woodstock after his birthplace, and since the 16th century he has been popularly known as the Black Prince. He was an outstanding military leader, and his victories over the French at the Battles of Crécy and Poitiers made him very popular during his lifetime. In 1348 he became the first Knight of the Order of the Garter, which he had helped to found. Edward died a year before his father, and became the first English Prince of Wales not to become King of England. Instead, the throne passed after Edward III’s death to his son Richard II when he was a minor. the black prince: the origin of the name is uncertain, whether it is derived from edward's black shield and/or armour, or whether it comes from edward's brutal reputation, particularly against the french in aquitaine. however, there is no solid evidence that edward ever wore black armour.
