Delight in Sword of the Black Prince
Sword of the Black Prince, Marto
Edward of Woodstock (1330–1376), known as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault and father of King Richard II of England. He was the first Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Wales, and Prince of Aquitaine. In his early life, he was called Edward of Woodstock after his birthplace, and from the 16th century, he has been popularly known as the Black Prince. He was an exceptional military leader, and his victories over the French at the Battles of Crécy and Poitiers made him very popular during his lifetime. In 1348, he became the first Knight of the Order of the Garter, which he had helped to found. Edward died a year before his father, becoming the first English Prince of Wales not to become King of England. Instead, the throne passed after Edward III's death to his son, Richard II, when he was a minor. The Black Prince: The origin of the name is uncertain, whether it derives from Edward's black shield and/or armor, or from Edward's brutal reputation, particularly against the French in Aquitaine. However, there is no solid evidence that Edward ever wore black armor.
