Gift Sword from the Vendel Period of Gotland (Broa), 8th Century, Bronze Handle, with Light Defects
Gotland Vendel period sword (Broa), 8th century, bronze handle, including scabbard, with slight defects
Defective item at a reduced price: The sword's blade is loose, so it rattles slightly when moved (see photos). Additionally, the sheath is a simple leather sheath (different from the standard sheath on SPQR-WP281). For these reasons, this item has a reduced price.
Please note that reduced-price products that are expressly identified as defective cannot be returned.
Important:
Several swords with similar defects are offered here. The images shown are for illustrative purposes only; errors vary from copy to copy.
This beautiful vendel sword is loosely modeled after a finely crafted artifact now in the Historical Museum ( Historiska Museet ) in Stockholm, Sweden (Exhibit 120525, SHM 10796). The original piece, a sword hilt made of gilt bronze (see last image), is a find from a Broa grave on the Swedish island of Gotland.
Numerous finds from the Vendel period (the period in Swedish history between the Migration and the Viking Age) bear witness to the high quality of Scandinavian craftsmanship of that time.
In terms of shape, this one-handed sword is a classic example of a Viking sword. The broad, double-edged carbon steel blade is medium-length and has a wide groove that runs the entire length of the blade, ending just short of the tip. The cutting edges are unsharpened; the point is pointed, and the blade's continuous tang is screwed into the pommel.
The magnificent hilt is made of bronze, polished, and decorated with sophisticated motifs inspired by the original find. Since swords with all-bronze handles tend to be quite heavy and somewhat unbalanced, we chose a hollow hilt to avoid this.
Our Vendel period one-handed sword comes with a wooden and leather scabbard.
Please note that this medieval sword is not suitable for stage combat. It is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
