Vendel Period Sword from Gotland (Broa), 8th Century, Bronze Handle
Gotland Vendel period sword (Broa), 8th century, bronze handle, including scabbard
This beautiful Vendel sword is loosely modelled on a finely crafted artefact now housed in the Historical Museum ( Historiska Museet ) in Stockholm, Sweden (Annex 120525, SHM 10796). The original piece, a sword hilt made of gilt bronze (see last image), is a find from a grave at Broa, on the Swedish island of Gotland.
Numerous finds from the Vendel period (the period in Swedish history between the migration and the Viking Age) bear witness to the high quality of Scandinavian craftsmanship of the period.
In terms of its shape, this one-handed sword is a classic example of a Viking sword. The broad, double-edged carbon steel blade is of medium length and has a wide groove that runs the entire length of the blade and only ends shortly before the tip. The cutting edges are not sharpened, the place for them is pointed, and the continuous tang of the blade is screwed into the pommel.
The magnificent hilt is made of bronze, polished and decorated with sophisticated motifs inspired by the original find. Since swords with all-bronze handles tend to be quite heavy and somewhat unbalanced, we chose a hollow hilt to avoid this.
Our one-handed sword from the Vendel period is delivered with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a wooden belt loop (maximum belt width 5.5 cm) and with a mouth band and a brass plate.
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
