Emperor Charlemagne's sword, bronze, mart
The Sword of Joyeuse, now in the Louvre Museum, is one of the most famous swords in history. Historical records link the sword to Charlemagne, King of the Franks. If it truly belonged to the famous king who ruled some 1,200 years ago, the Sword of Joyeuse would have been used in countless coronation ceremonies and is linked to ancient myths and legends attributing magical powers to it. The story begins in 802 AD. Legend has it that the Sword of Joyeuse, which means joyful in French, was forged by the famous blacksmith Gallas and took three years to complete. The sword was said to have magical powers associated with it. It was said to be so shiny that it could eclipse the sun and blind its wielder's enemies in battle, and anyone who wielded the legendary sword could not be harmed. It is said that Emperor Charlemagne, returning from Spain, set up camp in the region and acquired the sword.
