Enjoy One-Handed Sword Oakeshott Xvi
Late medieval one-handed Oakeshott type XVI sword, including scabbard
The one-handed sword offered here, classified as Type XVI according to the Oakeshott typology, is an excellent example of a medieval sword that was probably in use at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War between England and France.
The type of blade tapered uniformly to a sharp point with a distinctive central rib and buttress. The fuller ones usually extended from the guard to half or two-thirds of the way up the blade. Although there are exceptions, the hilt was usually fitted with a guard curved slightly towards the blade and a disc pommel (with or without bevelled edges).
Swords of the sixteenth type were especially popular in the first half of the fourteenth century. Their appearance and spread coincided with the advent of plate armour, which made it necessary to rethink sword design. Since chain mail had not yet completely gone out of fashion, the aim was to offer versatile swords that effectively combined cutting and piercing capabilities and could therefore withstand mixed types of armour. With their pointed placement and robust diamond cross-section, they were ideally suited for piercing gaps and joints in armour or piercing plate armour, but were also capable of powerful slashing and cutting.
Our reconstruction features a double-edged carbon steel blade that is grooved on both sides for approximately two-thirds of its length. The edges are not sharpened, but the placement is very pointed and the continuous tang of the blade is riveted to the pommel.
The handle consists of a steel cross-guard approximately 20.5 cm long curved slightly towards the blade, a wooden grip section tightly wrapped in leather, and a chamfered octagonal disc pommel of steel (Oakeshott type i1, a variant popular in the 14th and 15th centuries).
The beautiful wooden core sword scabbard is covered with brown leather and finally equipped with an approx. 4 cm wide carrying strap made of approx. 2 mm thick leather, which is wrapped around the scabbard. The pre-cut strap has a sufficient number of holes to adjust it for a comfortable and snug fit.
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
