Sword of Saint George, Marto
Saint George was a soldier in the Roman army who was later venerated as a Christian martyr. His parents were Christians of Greek origin; his father, Gerontius, was a Roman army officer from Cappadocia, and his mother, Polychronia, a Christian from Lydda in the Roman province of Syria Palestina (Palestine). At the age of 14, George decided to go to Nicomedia and apply to the Emperor Diocletian for a career as a soldier. Diocletian welcomed him with open arms, just as he had welcomed his father, Gerontius, one of his finest soldiers. In the late 1920s, George was promoted to the rank of tribune and posted to the Emperor's Imperial Guard near Nicomedia.
