Roland's sword, marto
Roland, Count of the Breton Marches in Charlemagne's Frankish Empire, served as commander of the rearguard of the Frankish army, which had led a campaign against the Moors. During their retreat, they were attacked by Christian Basques at the Pyrenees Pass, near Roncesvalles, and destroyed to the last man. The mountain dwellers had lighter weapons and were more mobile in the terrain.
There are several legends about Roland: for example, he fought against the gigantic Moorish warrior Ferracutus, whose only vulnerable spot, according to tradition, was his navel. His sword Durendal (or a copy of it) is believed to be in Rocamadour. Roland is also considered a symbol of the freedom of cities, compared to the territorial prince.
