Treat yourself to the Sword of Maurice (Vienna), Imperial Sword with Scabbard, 12th Century.
Sword of Maurice (Vienna), imperial sword with scabbard, 12th century.
This beautiful medieval sword is a replica of the imperial sword of the Holy Roman Empire. Since it also dates back to Saint Maurice, it is also known as the Maurice Sword.
This sword is one of the components of the imperial insignia or imperial regalia of the Roman-German emperors and kings and was presented by the pope to the new emperor during coronation ceremonies as a sign of secular power.
The original is currently on display in the centuries-old treasury of the Vienna Hofburg.
The reconstruction offered here has a long double-edged blade that tapers slightly towards the tip and has a groove along about two-thirds of its length. The cutting edges are not sharpened.
The cross-shaped handle ends in a pommel made of Brazil nut brass, which is decorated with a shield with the imperial eagle on one side and the shield of Emperor Otto IV on the other (shield split with three lions and an eagle split in two). The inscription
It also runs along the knob.
“Benedictvs. do(minv)s . de(v)s . qvi. Docet. manv(es)+”
(“Blessed be my lord and god, who teaches my hands to fight.”)
The crosspiece also has Latin inscriptions on both sides, taken from the laudes regiae.
“Christvs · vincit · christvs · reignat · christvs · inperat”
(“Christ conquers – Christ governs – Christ commands”).
The last part “christvs · inperat” is engraved on one side of the crosspiece only.
A matching wooden scabbard wrapped in high quality ochre leather is included. There are two adjustable loops on the sword scabbard, making it easy to attach to a belt.
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
