Martial artists have known this simple wisdom for centuries: if your goal is to wield a knife—to be able to use a sharp blade safely and effectively—you must first practice with a tool that is roughly the size, weight, and feel of a real weapon, but has the advantage of being unlikely to seriously injure yourself or your training partner. This idea has been practiced by many cultures, including the ancient Romans, who used wooden swords to train their gladiators in sword fighting. The only disadvantage was that wooden training instruments could rot, crack, splinter, or split naturally, and they couldn't be used in all weather conditions.
