Martial artists have known this simple wisdom for centuries: If your goal is to handle a knife – in order to be able to use a sharp blade safely and effectively – you should first practice with a tool that is roughly the size, weight, and feel of a real weapon, but which has the advantage that you will hardly be able to seriously injure yourself or your training partner. This idea has already been practiced by many cultures, including the ancient Romans, who used wooden swords to train their gladiators in sword fighting. The only disadvantage was that wooden training instruments could rot, crack, splinter or splinter naturally, and they could not be used in all weather conditions.
