The order reached its greatest splendor in the 13th century. The Templars considered themselves knights of God, honor of the Church and of Christianity. Their motto was non nobis, domine, non nobis, sed tuo nomini da gloriam. Give glory, not to us, God, not to us, but to your name. It was a very well-organized military force and served as combat troops in all the Crusades. They were in the vanguard during the attack and in the rearguard during the retreat. Throughout the century, they effectively governed the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. They paid no taxes or tributes, obeying only the Pope and holding properties throughout Europe and the Middle East.
