Julius caesar, gaius julius caesar, was ancient rome’s greatest soldier and political leader. During his lifetime the empire’s borders were advanced and secured; rome changed from a republic to a uni-sovereign government, and caesar was its first dictator. He wrote some of history’s greatest works in latin, describing the campaigns he led in gaulus and the civil wars; he was an architect, a mathematician, and one of the world’s orators of antiquity. There is no doubt that caesar was ambitious and that he enjoyed the great power placed in his hands. He is said to have wished to be crowned king. This was the reason given by the conspirators led by cassius and brutus for his assassination: caesar had become too powerful and too dangerous for the survival of the republic.
