Delight in the Sword of Philip II
Felipe II's sword, Marto
Philip II (1527–1598) was King of Spain, Naples, and Sicily, and Duke of Milan. He was also King of England and Ireland during his marriage to Queen Mary I. Philip II was Lord of the Seventeen Provinces of the Low Countries. His empire, known in Spanish as Philip the Wise (Felipe el Prude), encompassed territories on every continent then known to Europeans, including its namesake, the Philippine Islands. During his reign, Spain reached the height of its influence and power. This is sometimes called the Golden Age. The phrase, “The Empire on Which the Sun Never Sets,” was coined during Philip’s time to reflect the scope of his rule.
