Discover the Sword of Charles V
Sword of Charles V, Marto
Charles V (1500–1558), also known as Charles I of Spain (spanish: Carlos I), was Duke of Burgundy and Holy Roman Emperor. He was ruler of both the Spanish Empire from 1516 and the Holy Roman Empire from 1519, and of the Netherlands from 1506 until he voluntarily resigned these and other offices through a series of abdications between 1554 and 1556. Through inheritance, he united extensive territories in Western, Central, and Southern Europe, as well as Spain's colonies in the Americas and Asia. As a result, his domains spanned almost four million square kilometres and were first described as the Empire on which the sun never sets. He was known in his time as the Emperor, unlike any other king who was able to unite such a large empire under his rule. He inherited Spain, America, Naples and Sicily from his grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs; Flanders and Austria from Maximilian of Austria. In 1519 he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor and ruled the largest empire since the time of Charlemagne.
