Gift European Knight's Sword, 14th Century.
European knight's sword, 14th century
Similar swords have been found throughout Europe and were probably in use at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War.
The original of this medieval knight's sword is part of the Royal Armoury collection (object number ix.2141) and has several special features.
The ingeniously designed crossguard curves toward the blade, tapers slightly, and widens again at the ends. The handle fits comfortably in the hand, and the pommel has a distinctive shape due to its angles and edges. The broad blade has a flattened, diamond-shaped cross-section, two cutting edges, and a narrow groove. It widens slightly at the guard and ends in a point. This sword is fairly light for its size, yet offers plenty of blade weight.
The blade of this replica was handcrafted by a skilled blacksmith. It is made of 1080 carbon steel, hardened, and tapered distally for optimal weight distribution.
The wooden-core scabbard is covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a beveled brass plate featuring decorative recesses and a decorative acorn-shaped tip. At the muzzle, leather covers part of the crossguard.
A certificate of authenticity and a cleaning cloth are included.
