Gift Knight of the River Witham Sword with Scabbard, 13th Century.
Knight's sword of the River Witham with scabbard, 13th century
This beautiful one-handed sword is based on an original now in the collection of the British Museum in London. The knightly sword, dating from the 13th century, was found in the River Witham near Lincoln, England, in 1825. A special feature of this sword is the inscription “+ndxoxchwdrghdxorvi+” inlaid with gold wire. Despite numerous speculations and attempts at deciphering it, the meaning of the presumably Latin acronym remains unclear to this day.
The sword has a wide, double-edged blade with blunt cutting edges. Two deep grooves run almost its entire length. Like the original, the inscription is engraved on one side and a sequence of symbols consisting of stylized crosses, crescents, and quatrefoils on the other. The guard and disc pommel, riveted to the blade's tang, are made of steel. The wooden handle section was wrapped with a brown leather strap.
This medieval knight's sword comes with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a steel hood and mouthpiece, as well as attachment rings for a sword belt.
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It's also ideal as an accessory, for example, to complete your costume.
