Gift Knight's Sword of the River Witham with Scabbard, 13th Century.

Witham River Knight's Sword with Scabbard, 13th Century

This beautiful one-handed sword is based on an original now in the collection of the British Museum in London. The knightly sword, dating back to the 13th century, was found in the River Witham near Lincoln, England, in 1825. A special feature of this sword is the inscription “+ndxoxchwdrghdxorvi+” inlaid with gold wire. Despite numerous speculations and attempts to decipher it, the meaning of the presumably Latin acronym remains unclear to this day.

The sword has a broad, double-edged blade with unsharpened cutting edges. Two deep grooves run almost its entire length. Like the original, the inscription is engraved on one side and a sequence of symbols consisting of stylized crosses, crescents and quatrefoils on the other. The guard and the disc pommel riveted to the blade tang are made of steel. The wooden handle section was wrapped with a brown leather strap.

This medieval knight's sword comes with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with hood and steel muzzle plate, as well as attachment rings for a sword belt.

This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
