Dueling reached the height of its popularity in the mid-17th century. This method of settling matters of honour with swords was so common that the French king Louis XIII banned dueling by law, for fear of losing many of his important dignitaries in this dangerous enterprise!



Nobles considered it their duty as men to defend their honor with the sword. Therefore, they not only brought in experienced teachers to expand their knowledge and skills in sword fighting, but they also sought out new types of weapons in order to gain a decisive advantage. One sword in particular began to gain popularity: a smaller, lighter, faster version of the rapier that was more comfortable to carry and more agile in battle. This variant was a precursor to the later dress or court sword (known in the English-speaking world as the smallsword ), and is simply referred to by some as the transitional rapier (or transitional rapier ).



Cold Steels® interpretation of this weapon, called a Cavalier rapier , features a sharp, double-edged, highly tapered blade that is significantly shorter and lighter (and therefore more agile and maneuverable) than a classic rapier. The hardened steel openwork guard plate, rings, guards and handle guard provide incredible hand protection, while the wire-wrapped handle and balance pommel ensure maximum comfort and maneuverability.



The scope of delivery includes a hand-stitched leather sheath with steel mouth plate and hood strap and an integrated belt hook for optimum carrying comfort.



1055 carbon steel

The carbon content and relatively low levels of other materials in this steel make it a very stable material, free of the brittleness inherent in most high carbon steels. This steel is ideal for blades that need to have a high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed knives, machetes and swords.
