Dueling reached the height of its popularity in the mid-17th century. This method of settling matters of honor with swords was so common that the French king Louis XIII outlawed dueling, for fear of losing many of his important dignitaries in this dangerous endeavor!
Nobles considered it their duty as men to defend their honor with the sword. Therefore, they not only brought in experienced teachers to expand their knowledge and skills in swordfighting, but also sought out new types of weapons to gain a decisive advantage. One sword in particular began to gain popularity: a smaller, lighter, and faster version of the rapier that was more comfortable to carry and more agile in battle. This variant was a precursor to the later full or court sword (known in the English-speaking world as the smallsword ), and is referred to by some simply as the transitional rapier ( transitional rapier ).
Cold Steels®'s interpretation of this weapon, called the Cavalier Rapier , features a razor-sharp, double-edged, tapered blade that is significantly shorter and lighter (and therefore more agile and maneuverable) than a classic rapier. The openwork, hardened steel guard plate, rings, guards, and handle guard provide incredible hand protection, while the wire-wrapped handle and balanced pommel ensure maximum comfort and maneuverability.
The scope of delivery includes a hand-stitched leather sheath with a steel mouthpiece and a chapel-type strap and an integrated belt hook for optimal carrying comfort.
Carbon steel 1055
The carbon content and relatively low levels of other materials in this steel make it a very stable material, free from the brittleness inherent in most high-carbon steels. This steel is ideal for blades that require high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed knives, machetes, and swords.
