German and Swiss soldiers, known for their strength and bravery, were the first to use this type of sword. The bastard sword soon became increasingly popular in other areas of the European continent and in the British Isles.
The name bastard is undoubtedly due to the fact that the sword cannot be classified as a single-handed or two-handed sword. This one-and-a-half-handed sword was developed specifically for infantry and was a common weapon in the early 16th century. The cultures of northern Europe made the development of different styles of fighting with the one-and-a-half-handed sword their specialty. In this respect, the German peoples played an important role in the spread of this sword and used it widely.

The antique patina of the blade gives this Paul Chen bastard sword a particularly authentic look. The muzzle and the headpiece of the leather-covered scabbard are made of patinated steel.
