Round Viking Fenrir Shield with Rawhide Edge, 80 cm ø



The large and beautiful Viking shield we offer here is made of approximately 13 mm thick plywood and features a stylized motif of the Fenris wolf (also fenrir , fenris or fenrisúlfr ) and a sequence of runes from the Elder Futhark (the oldest runic alphabet) spelling out his name.



In Germanic mythology, Fenrir is one of the three world enemies, along with Hel and the Midgard serpent Jörmungandr. All three are sons of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Fenrir fights against the existing order and ultimately embodies the destruction of the world. The gods recognize his danger, use a trick to chain him to a rock and sink him deep into the earth. In order for this plan to succeed, the war god Tyr even sacrifices a hand. The wolf is tamed for a long time until finally, during the twilight of the gods, he breaks his chains and devours Odin. Widar, Odin’s son, kills Fenrir, but it is too late – the father of the gods falls and with him the world order.



In the centre of the shield there is a generously sized steel protrusion, which is firmly fixed with four rivets and offers enough space even for strong Viking hands. The edge of the shield is covered with rawhide (parchment) and the back of the shield is equipped with three riveted wooden reinforcement strips. The central bar also serves as a grip and is wrapped in leather at the level of the shield hole for a comfortable grip.



Although this wooden shield is too thin for full contact, it is still a great prop for reenactment, larp, ​​stage or TV/film and will complete your transformation into a proud Norse warrior. It is also a lovely collector's or display piece or decorative object for all lovers of the Viking age.
