Roman Shield Scutum of Legionary
The Scutum was the iconic shield used by Roman legionaries. Its curved, sturdy design not only offered exceptional protection but also allowed for the creation of impenetrable military formations, such as the famous testudo formation . This tactic, commonly employed in sieges, allowed legionaries to effectively protect themselves from projectiles launched from any angle, including arrows, javelins, stones, and even objects thrown from the top of the walls.
The curved shape of the scutum helped deflect the strongest blows, while its sides provided additional protection for the soldier. This way, enemy arrows and attacks were deflected, reducing their impact on the legionary.
The umbo , the central covering of the shield, made of copper or iron, not only protected but was also used offensively. Its weight and density were enough to stun or unbalance an opponent, making it easier for the legionary to launch a decisive attack with his gladius . Legionaries often advanced with their scutum slightly raised, covering their (usually unarmored) lower body, blocking their opponent before thrusting with the gladius. The shield's metal-reinforced edges could also be used as an offensive weapon.
This is a faithful reconstruction of a scutum, the distinctive shield of Roman legionaries during the Roman Empire.
