This Hand-Forged Medieval Conical Umbo is an essential element in the construction of any authentic shield. Forged in the traditional manner from 16-gauge steel, each boss displays natural hammer marks and subtle variations that make it unique. The conical dome shape has been used in shield designs since the early Middle Ages, prized for its ability to deflect direct blows away from the hand while reinforcing the center of the shield against heavy blows.
Historical Background: Shield bosses (umbos) like this one were common in Viking and Norman cultures, and continued into medieval Europe. The conical shape became especially popular because it improved the deflection of slashing and piercing attacks, reducing the risk of direct damage to the bearer's knuckles. From Viking round shields to Norman kite shields and medieval heater shields, this design was at the heart of functional battlefield defense.
Installation Instructions: Mounting your boss is simple. Center it over the grip hole in your shield, mark the rivet holes, and drill the corresponding openings into your shield. Insert the included rivets through the boss and shield plate, then use a hammer and anvil (or rivet set) to flatten the ends inside, securing the boss firmly in place. The supplied washers ensure the rivets stay in place without damaging the wood.
The natural blackened finish helps resist corrosion, yet retains the raw, authentic look so beloved by collectors and history enthusiasts. Regular oiling will preserve this patina for years of service.
Whether you're preparing for HEMA matches, SCA battles, or creating a display-worthy shield for your living room, this forged steel umbo will ground your project in genuine craftsmanship and historical accuracy.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Clean after handling
- Apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust.
- Store in a dry place
- Periodically check the tightness of the rivets after use⭐
