Featuring Anglo-Saxon Shield With Snake And Runes Motif, 61cm (24")

Anglo-Saxon round shield with snake and rune motif, 61 cm ø

The round shield offered here is made of plywood with approx. elaborate snake motif and decorated with three runes from the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet, the so-called futhorc .

Although the runes are of Anglo-Saxon origin, the snake motif can be interpreted as a representation of the Norse Midgard Serpent (also called Jörmungandr or Weltumgürter), a key figure in Germanic mythology — making the shield suitable as a Viking shield. Along with Hel and the wolf Fenris, the snake is one of the three enemies of the world. All three are children of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Jormungand rests in the depths of the sea surrounding Midgard. Her body is so large that it envelops the entire continent, and she holds the tip of her own tail at her throat. When she awakens and the sea is stirred, great floods sweep through the mortal world. At the same time, the snake biting its own tail is a significant symbol of unity and the eternal recurrence of all things. In the third encounter between Thor and Jörmungand at the time of Ragnarök , Thor manages to kill the Midgard Serpent with his hammer Mjölnir.

The shield boss included in the delivery can be easily attached to the shield using the included rivets and is suitable even for strong Viking hands enough space. The edge of the shield is reinforced with metal and the back is equipped with a solid wooden handle.

Although this wooden shield is too light and thin for full contact, it is still an excellent prop for reenactment, larp, stage or tv/film and will become yours. Make your transformation into a proud anglo-saxon -saxon warrior or viking just perfect. It is also a beautiful collector's or display piece or decorative object.
