Like a surprising number of other historic battlefield weapons, the English bill (also known as a bill hook or hippe or kriegshippe / kriegsheppe) finds its origins in agriculture. Farmers used this ancient forestry tool to grab hold of hard-to-reach climbing plants and branches, clear away dense foliage, and, if necessary, cut away large limbs. It didn't take much imagination to see the possibilities this heavy implement would offer as a weapon.



As the hippe was increasingly used in battle, it became a reliable combat instrument. Its enlarged form, with sharp edges and hooked blades, was fast, manoeuvrable and relentless. In the right hands, a good warship could hook, off-balance, thrust, stab, slash and hack with equal ease, and even take on heavily armed and mounted opponents. The sight of a force lined up with these weapons was terrifying!



The English Bill from Cold Steel® represents the highest level of development in the combat version of this formidable tool. The blade, tip and ripping hook of the axe are all fully sharpened and are complemented by a particularly deep shaft holder made of steel and a sturdy shaft.
