Like a surprising number of other historic battlefield weapons, the English bill (also known as the bill hook , hippe , or kriegshippe ) finds its origins in agriculture. Farmers used this early forestry tool to grab climbing plants and hard-to-reach branches, clear dense foliage, and, if necessary, cut down large branches. It didn't take much imagination to see the possibilities this heavy implement would offer as a weapon.

As the hippe was increasingly used in battle, it became a reliable fighting instrument. Its enlarged form, with razor-sharp edges and hooked blades, was swift, maneuverable, and relentless. In the right hands, a good warship could hook, unbalance, thrust, stab, slash, and hack with equal ease, and even take on heavily armed and mounted opponents. The sight of a force arrayed with these weapons was terrifying!
