Gift Saufeder Lace, Approx. 50 cm.
Medieval Saufeder lace, approx. 50 cm
The so-called winged lance, which was primarily used as a thrusting weapon, is actually of Franco-Carolingian origin and was used as a hunting and war lance well into the High Middle Ages. The lateral wings or projections were intended to prevent the point from penetrating too deeply when thrusting (which would have made it difficult to draw the lance) and offered an effective way to parry enemy attacks in close combat.
As the name suggests, the saufeder (which existed in many variations) was specifically designed for hunting wild boar and big game. The spearhead's wings were not only intended to prevent too deep penetration into the prey, but also offered additional control and better protection against a wounded and enraged animal.
The large medieval Saufeder lance we offer here is ideal for 8th/9th century to 11th/12th century backgrounds. Its structure largely corresponds to the Carolingian winged lance, widespread among warriors and hunters in the Early Middle Ages. It is made of heat-treated EN45 carbon steel, has a total length of approximately 50 cm, and has an impressively long, extensively machined, leaf-shaped blade that would have been capable of inflicting a deep, wide wound and killing a large animal with a single, powerful blow. The protruding wings, located just below the blade on either side of the beak, are approximately 4 mm thick. Two holes allow it to be mounted on a wooden handle of your choice to create your own spear. Delivery does not include a shaft or mounting hardware.
Alternatively, collectors can also purchase our wooden spearhead stand (sold separately, item number 1816375000) to stylishly display their treasures in their armory.
Please note that this spearhead was designed primarily as a collector's item, decorative object, or accessory and is not suitable for exhibition combat! The blade tip is not rounded, and the edges are not sharpened, but ground (with proper equipment and practical experience, they can be sharpened if necessary).
