Treat Yourself To Bilbo's Journey To Erebor By Stefan Servos

Bilbo's journey to Erebor
Special space view on the new Tolkien film
By Stefan Servos

It’s not often that a film has such an influence on an entire generation, that the characters seem familiar, the quotes become common phrases (you can’t pass!) and the design finds hordes of imitators. One such film adaptation is without a doubt Lord of the Rings. After years of work in New Zealand, director Peter Jackson and his team created an epic film that exceeded all expectations. With 17 Oscars and a cinematic revenue of $3 billion, the film trilogy is one of the most successful cinematic works of all time.

Now another tolkien film adaptation is coming to theaters and once again the expectations of the fans are huge! and once again it is peter jackson who takes charge of this difficult film adaptation. it has been 17 years since jackson first contacted miramax to bring the hobbit to theaters. it took 17 years until jackson was finally able to bring his dream of the adventurous bilbo baggins to the screen. but that is nothing compared to the story of the hobbit’s origin, which begins with a single sentence, written over 80 years ago: in a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.

When Tolkien absentmindedly writes this sentence on a piece of paper while marking his students' exams, he has no idea that this sentence will fundamentally change his life. Little by little, he turns the story around, invents a whole universe around his hobbit and thus creates a unique children's book. In 1936, six years after the first series, The Hobbit was published with a print run of 1,500 copies. The story takes place almost 80 years before the War of the Ring and describes the adventures of Frodo's uncle, Bilbo Baggins, who, as a young hobbit, sets out with the wizard Gandalf and 13 dwarves to recover an ancient dragon's treasure. What at first glance seems like a nice children's story is actually the beginning of the epic battle for Middle-earth.

Fantasy expert Stefan Servos recounts the genesis of this unique myth, illuminates the film's locations and sets in New Zealand, reconstructs the hardships Peter Jackson had to contend with, and beautifully prepares for the film's long-awaited release.
