Uhtred of Bebbanburg, born the son of a Saxon nobleman but kidnapped by the Danes and raised as one of their own, is forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people he grew up with. His loyalties are tested time and again. What is he? A Saxon or a Dane?

A born warrior, Uhtred is a fearless and instinctive leader. Bound to the king by an oath, he takes part in Alfred's attempts to unite England into a single kingdom in the face of encroaching Danes. After Alfred's death, his children Edward and Aethelflaed pursue their father's dream, and Uhtred returns to family politics when he enters Edward's service and falls in love with Aethelflaed. In his quest to reclaim his birthright, his homeland of Bebbanburg, taken from him by his treacherous uncle Aelfric, Uhtred must walk a perilous path if he is to play his part in the creation of a nation and, ultimately, reclaim the land of his ancestors.

Uhtred is easy to spot on the battlefield as he wields his signature amber-hilted sword, Serpent-Breath, and his enemies are brought low. Fate is everything.
