King Elendil, father of Isildur, was the original bearer of the Lord of the Rings' mighty sword Narsil . Towards the end of the Second Age of Middle-earth, in the great battle between Mordor and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, the sword Narsil was shattered and Elendil fell. But Ilsidur still managed to use a shard of Narsil to cut off the finger with the One Ring from the hand of the Dark Ruler Sauron. After the loss of the ring, Sauron's body was destroyed.

The shards of Narsil were guarded by the Elves in Rivendell for 3,000 years. It was not until the end of the Third Age that the sword was reforged to serve Aragorn, the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor, under the name Anduril (also known as the Westerosi ).
