Arwen's sword is called hadhafang , which means something like horde blade . It once belonged to the elven-princess Idril, who married a mortal and gave birth to Eärendil. Earendil was the father of Elrond and the grandfather of Arwen. At the end of the Second Age of Middle-earth, before Arwen's birth, Elrond led Hadhafang against Sauron in the great battle of the last alliance of elves and men . Later, her daughter Arwen used this mighty sword when she helped Frodo escape the ringwraiths ( Nazgûl ). On the blade there is the following runic inscription in the Elvish language Sindarin: aen estar hadhafang i gallina chathol, thand arod dan i thang an i arwen , which means roughly: This sword is called hadhafang, A noble sword against a cruel foe for a noble lady . The inscription contains an intended pun, as the Sindarin word for noble lady is Arwen . So the sword itself is described as belonging to Arwen, even though it was originally forged for Idril, Arwen's great-grandmother.
