The Book of Discoveries
By Ray Howgego
Translated from English by Michael Haupt
They were adventurers, pioneers, traders, and missionaries who ventured into uncharted territories and dared to travel into the unknown. Most voyages had a specific purpose; research voyages for the purpose of knowledge were the exception until the early 20th century.
Ray Howgego takes the reader on a journey through the history of geographical discovery. He reports on such ventures as the search for the legendary Empire of Punt, Marco Polo's experiences in China, the seven voyages of Admiral Zheng He, Magellan's circumnavigation of the Earth, Samuel and Florence Baker's expeditions to the source of the Nile, the Voyage of the Beagle and Wally Herbert's 1969 Transarctic Expedition, and many others. The volume compiles a total of 150 influential and unusual voyages of discovery in chronological order. Each voyage is presented in its historical context; the people and motives are recorded, as well as the circumstances and (often harsh) conditions. The volume is richly illustrated with contemporary maps, paintings, and photographs.
