Gift The Army of Alexander the Great, Maa148

The army of Alexander the Great
(Men at Arms 148)

Author: Nicholas Sekunda
Illustrator: Angus McBride

Paperback; March 1992; 48 pages

About this book:
When Philip II ascended the throne in 359 BC, Macedonia was in danger of being engulfed by wild barbarian tribes to the north and cunning Greek cities to the south. Philip had to expand the power of the throne or be devoured: the creation of a powerful army was imperative. When his son Alexander inherited his kingdom at the age of 20, he also inherited a truly unrivaled army. The Macedonians were battle veterans, well-equipped, and eager to conquer. Add to this Alexander's supreme gifts as a military commander, and it's no wonder they achieved so much.

Nicholas Sekunda was born in 1953. After studying ancient history and archaeology at the University of Manchester, he completed his PhD in 1981. He participated in archaeological excavations in Poland, Iran, and Greece, and was involved in a research project on ancient Persian warfare for the British Institute of Persian Studies. He has published numerous books and scholarly articles and currently teaches at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology in Torun, Poland.

Angus McBride was one of the world's most respected historical illustrators, contributing to more than 90 Osprey titles over three decades. Born in 1931 to Highland parents but orphaned as a child, he was educated at Canterbury Cathedral Choir School. He worked in advertising agencies from 1947 and, after national service, emigrated to South Africa, where he lived for several years before moving to Ireland. Angus sadly passed away in 2007.
