Numerous flags changed hands, in most cases lost, during the fateful Battle of Waterloo or La Belle Alliance on 18 June 1815. Extremely dramatic circumstances. Standards in particular were often the preferred target of enemy attacks and losses among standard-bearers and their guards were often enormous during a battle.

For many of the captured and lost flags or standards, the circumstances under which they were taken from the troops or under which they were tenaciously defended were recorded with great precision. From time to time we receive fuller personal information about those who took a standard from the enemy or saved it from being lost, often at the sacrifice of their own lives.

On this basis, the reader learns details about a whole series of often bitter disputes over the ownership of these military emblems. Many other flags describe their state during battles or immediately after the battle. All the flags and standards mentioned are graphically shown in detail.

In addition to the Battle of Waterloo itself on 18 June 1815, the Battles of Quatre Bras, Ligny and Plancenoit are also considered as notable events involving flags.
