The so-called lorica hamata was the chain mail of the Roman legionary. It was particularly characterised by the typical doubling of the shoulders.

We offer this shoulder duplication individually to convert our rm braid chainmail into a Roman legionary shirt.

Item includes the brass buttons, hooks and rivets shown and the stitched leather trim. The leather is vegetable tanned.

The RM chain mail is made of rings with a diameter of only 6 mm. According to the original templates, it consists of a row of riveted rings (round rivet heads) and a row of perforated rings. Due to the extremely small diameter of the rings, these chain mail could then and now be made of steel with a material thickness of only 1 mm without losing their strength. This results in a weight reduction of approximately 30 - 35 %.

We shortened this type of braid to rm (English = roman m aille) because it was already very popular among the Celts and Romans (hamata). This ring armor mesh was in use until the late Middle Ages.
