Jade Lion Dagger
The concept of the lion as a guardian originated in China over 1,800 years ago, during the Han Dynasty. Fierce, brave, loyal and agile, the lion acted as a perfect symbol for the protection of hearth and home. It had both symbolic meaning and a decorative function – elegant statues of guardian lions were often placed in front of the homes of the wealthy and noble, even in front of the gates of the imperial palace and the tombs of Chinese emperors.
Cold Steels® Jade Lion Series is very popular among collectors and fans of Chinese martial arts. The blades in the collection have been hand forged from high-grade Damascus steel and expertly hardened, and with their sophisticated pattern they are not only sharp but also beautiful. The guard and pommel are made of nickel silver and decorated with the Chinese motif of the vigilant lion. They provide a strong contrast to the elegant jade green cord that wraps around the handle and to the wooden scabbard, which is covered with matching dyed stingray skin (same).
The Jade Lion Dagger is the scaled down image of the Jade Lion Sword. The design and materials used are identical and this dagger has just as much emphasis on craftsmanship as its larger counterpart. It is perfectly balanced and strong enough to be used as a standalone weapon or as a secondary weapon to its larger brother.
Damascus steel
The term Damascus steel , Damascus steel or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered an ancient stronghold and the origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard, high-carbon steel and a soft, low-carbon steel are joined together by repeated welding and forging. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and increased edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breaking. With this technology, which was developed in an age of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colors in different materials, the blade is made of high-carbon steel.
The carbon content also creates stunning patterns of alternating layers. Because of these patterns, Damascus swords from the Middle Ages were said to have an inherent magic.
