The Celtic people lived during the Iron Age and dominated most of Western and Central Europe. Although they shared a common language and cultural characteristics, all peoples were warriors, so they fought each other. Tribal warfare focused more on raiding and hunting than on organized territorial conquest. Weapons were almost sacred to the ancient Celts. One intended for the battlefield, more sober and functional, and another ceremonial, much more elaborate. Celtic warriors wore armor, shields, spears and even horse harness. But where the craftsmen were most creative was in the hilts of the ultimate weapon: the sword. They decorated its large handles with precious stones, ivory or enamel. They decorated the swords and helmets with original human figures or animal heads.
