Treat Yourself to a Viking Horn with Fenrir Motif
Viking drinking horn with Fenrir motif
The drinking horn, usually made from the horn of a cattle or goat, was a popular drinking vessel in many cultures and eras and was particularly important in ceremonies. It remained in use until the early modern period, especially in the Germanic areas of Europe. It was especially popular in Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages. The drinking horn is mentioned in both the Prose Edda and the Song Edda. Although fragments of Viking Age horns are rarely found in excavations, the number of metal drinking horn fittings that have survived suggests that their use was much more widespread than actual finds suggest.
This Viking drinking horn is handcrafted from horn, polished and decorated with a carved motif of the wolf Fenris (also Fenrir, Fenris or Fenrisúlfr ). In Germanic mythology, Fenrir, the son of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, is one of the enemies of the world. He fights against the existing order and ultimately embodies the destruction of the world. The gods recognize his danger, use a trick to chain him to a rock and sink him deep into the earth. The wolf is tamed for a long time until finally, during the twilight of the gods, he breaks his chains and devours Odin. Widar, Odin’s son, kills Fenrir, but it is too late – the father of the gods falls and with him the world order.
Whether in a modern home or to recreate a medieval or Viking atmosphere, this rustic and highly decorative container will be an eye-catcher on any dining table.
For hygienic reasons, the inside of the horn is painted to be food-safe, so you can enjoy your favourite beer (or your favourite honey wine or mead) to the fullest.
A great gift idea for today's Viking!
