The drinking horn, usually made from the horn of a cattle or goat, was a popular drinking vessel in many cultures and eras and was particularly important in ceremonies. It remained in use into the early modern period, especially in the Germanic areas of Europe. It was especially popular in Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages. The drinking horn is mentioned in both the Prose Edda and the Song Edda. Although fragments of Viking Age horns are rarely found in archaeological excavations, the number of surviving metal drinking horn fittings suggests that their use was much more widespread than finds of actual horns suggest.



The drinking horn offered here is handcrafted from cattle horn, polished and decorated with an engraved motif of Odin on his legendary eight-legged horse Sleipnir (also Sleipner ). The design is based on an 8th-century picture stone that was found near Tjängvide on the Swedish island of Gotland and is now housed in the State Historical Museum ( Statens Historiska Museum , Historiska Museet for short) that can be admired in Stockholm. Although the motifs depicted on the Tjängvide Picture Stone still leave room for interpretation today, most experts usually identify the mounted warrior depicted in the upper right field of the stone as the Norse father of the gods sitting on Sleipnir.
