The drinking horn, usually made from cattle or goat horn, was a popular drinking vessel in many cultures and eras and was particularly important in ceremonies. It remained in use until the early modern period, especially in the Germanic areas of Europe. It was especially popular in Scandinavia during the early Middle Ages. The drinking horn is mentioned in both the Prose Edda and the Song Edda. Although fragments of Viking Age horns are rarely found in archaeological excavations, the number of surviving metal drinking horn fittings suggests that their use was much more widespread than the finds of actual horns suggest.

The drinking horn offered here is handmade from cattle horn, polished, and decorated with an engraved motif of the wolf Fenris (also fenrir , fenris , or fenrisulfr ). In Germanic mythology, Fenrir, son of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, is one of the enemies of the world. He fights against the existing order and ultimately embodies the destruction of the world. The gods recognize his danger and use a trick to chain him to a rock and sink him deep into the earth. The wolf is tamed for a long time until finally, during the twilight of the gods, it breaks its chains and devours Odin. Widar, Odin's son, kills Fenrir, but it is too late. The father of the gods falls, and with him the order of the world.
