Discover Long Knife with Leather Sheath, Circa 1510

Long knife, circa 1510 AD

As cities and the bourgeoisie grew stronger in the late Middle Ages, so did the demand for a civilian defensive weapon. At that time, only the nobility were allowed to wield double-edged swords. For the common man, the so-called long knife developed, an enlarged version of the medieval peasant guard . Unlike the large, saber-like knife that emerged at the same time, the blade was straight and single-edged. However, the long knife often had a so-called back edge at the tip, i.e., two cutting edges at the end.

This Ulfberth long knife is inspired by a well-preserved original that was in the collection of Crown Prince Ernst August of Hanover, but was auctioned in 2012.

The forged guard is curved in an S shape and has a large protective ring on the back. The strong tang is riveted to the solid wrought iron pommel. The wooden handles are secured with seven iron ball-head rivets. The upper half of the blade is triple-fulled. It is hand-forged from EN45 spring steel, oil-hardened, and tempered to approximately 48–50 HRC. However, the edge is not sharpened.

The sword comes with a matching leather sheath.
