Discover Long Knife With Leather Sheath, Circa 1510

Long knife, ca. 1510 AD

As cities and the bourgeoisie grew stronger in the late Middle Ages, the demand for a civilian defensive weapon also grew. At that time, only the nobility was allowed to wield double-edged swords. For the common man, the so-called long knife was developed - an enlarged version of the medieval peasant guard . In contrast to the large, sabre-shaped knife that emerged at the same time, the blade was straight and single-edged. However, the long knife often had a so-called trailing edge at the tip, i.e. it had two edges at the end.

This long knife from Ulfberth is based on a well-preserved original that was in the collection of Crown Prince Ernst August of Hanover, but was auctioned off in 2012.

The forged guard is curved in an S-shape and has a large guard ring on the back. The strong tang is riveted to the solid wrought iron pommel. The wooden handles are attached with seven iron ball-head rivets. The upper half of the blade is triple fulled. It is hand forged from EN45 spring steel, oil-quenched and tempered to approximately 48-50 HRC. However, the cutting edge is not sharpened.

The sword comes with a matching leather sheath.
