The vegvísir ( sign ) is a magical sign or so-called sigil ( galdrastafir ) of Icelandic origin. As a concrete representation, this symbol can be found for the first time in the Icelandic manuscript huld by geir vigfússon from 1860, a collection of rune/spell series and sigils. The following is written there about vegvísir:

“When this symbol is carried, the bearer will not be lost in the storm or the wind, even if the path to follow is unknown.”



Although Vegvísir is now referred to as the Viking compass, there is no evidence that it was actually used by the Norse in the Viking Age (a good 8 to 10 centuries before the manuscript was written). However, it remains important today. While followers of Germanic Neopaganism interpret it as a representation of the nine worlds of Norse mythology, in modern everyday life, for example as a pendant or amulet/talisman, it is often used as a sign in a figurative sense. Its purpose is to help its wearer survive the storms that life brings, even on unfamiliar paths.
