Give a Sutton Hoo Leather Belt
Anglo-Saxon belt of Sutton Hoo
The Sutton Hoo archaeological site in East Anglia, England, includes numerous burial mounds, including the famous Ship Grave, from which precious and remarkably well-preserved artefacts dating back to the 7th century were recovered. The most famous finds from this grave are probably the helmet and the great gold buckle from Sutton Hoo, both important testimonies of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship.
Among the ruling classes of the Anglo-Saxons and other Germanic peoples, expensive and elaborately decorated belts were essential as prestigious clothing accessories.
This sturdy belt is inspired by the original historical find from Sutton Hoo. The massive, elaborately designed brass belt buckle is a detailed replica of the original gold buckle from the Ship Grave, as can be admired in the British Museum in London. It consists of three parts: an elongated, egg-shaped mounting plate, a mandrel with a round plate, and a holder. The mandrel plate and the holder can be moved independently of each other. All components of the belt buckle are richly decorated: the adjustment plate is covered over its entire surface with animals or animal-like creatures, from writhing snakes to intertwined quadrupeds and stylized bird heads, and is fixed to the belt with three semicircular decorative rivets. The snake-shaped decorations are repeated on the spiked plate and on the two adjustment plates attached to the belt, while the buckle holder is decorated with fine braided motifs.
The strap, approximately 4 cm wide and 3 mm thick, is made of high-quality cowhide and has 15 rectangular holes for a perfect fit.
This beautiful belt is sure to be the talk of any medieval market, larp or reenactment event. Not only is it a perfect and noble addition to any early medieval outfit, but it is also absolutely suitable for everyday wear.
