This elegant medieval belt is named after Saint George (George of Lod), a Roman officer of Greek descent who served in the Praetorian Guard of the Emperor Diocletian and was executed in AD 303 for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. He was canonized in AD 494, and over the centuries his veneration as a great martyr spread throughout the Middle East and Europe. By the time of the Crusades (11th/12th centuries), Saint George was already one of the most venerated of the so-called soldier saints. He was praised as a model of chivalry, and the myths and legends surrounding his life and exploits (the most popular being the legend of Saint George and the dragon) were passed down from generation to generation in the Middle Ages. Depictions of him in the High and Late Middle Ages, often riding a white horse, are almost innumerable.



This approximately 4 to 4.5 cm wide belt is made of sturdy 2 mm thick leather. The large buckle is decorated with the famous medieval depiction of St. George on horseback slaying the dragon with his lance. The strap is decorated alternately with heraldic eagles and stylized lilies. All fittings are made of brass.



The belt measures approx. 138 cm in length in total and has no holes. The back of the buckle is fitted with a spike which is anchored into the hole at the end of the strap. Alternatively, the strap can be pierced to create a perfect fit for the spike or simply knotted in true medieval style.



The leather belt blends best with early and late medieval backgrounds and is particularly suited to depicting a knight or nobleman of the 13th or 14th century.
