Enjoy Cinquedea, Short Sword
Cinquedea, short sword
Cold Steels® The fascination with the Cinquedea (also known as Ochsenzunge in German-speaking countries) goes back a long way. It was known as the popular weapon of those nobles who had to navigate the narrow streets of Italy's fortified cities. This sword was used solely for civilian self-defense and was essentially the precursor to the civilian sword and rapier; however, it seems that this self-defense weapon owes its design as much to the dictates of fashion as to the need for a deadly weapon. Bladed weapon!
The surviving examples of this unusual weapon with a short handle, a very sharp blade, and multiple deep grooves are often richly decorated, elaborately engraved, or gilded, and resemble jewelry more than weapons. But behind this High Renaissance romanticism lay a useful instrument, a cutting and stabbing weapon with a wide, rigid blade that could be used in the smallest of spaces and was capable of inflicting a fatal wound.
Cold Steels®, our own interpretation of the Cinquedea, is crafted from expertly hardened 1065 carbon steel. The guard and pommel are richly decorated with engravings, and the Malaysian salwood handle is embellished with hand-carvings. A leather sheath is included. The steel mouthpiece and bevel are also engraved.
