Cingulum militare, Roman legionary belt with pterygos and brass fittings
She-wolf with Romulus and Remus
The Roman cingulum militare was a leather belt decorated with decorative metal plates and often fitted with brackets or devices for hanging the soldier's dagger. This war belt not only served to support the warrior's braccae (trousers) during battle, but was also a sign of military rank or honor.
The cincture often included a leather apron, consisting of several narrow, flat strips (so-called pteryges or pteruges ), which hung from the belt and were decorated with continuous rows of riveted metal fittings. Each strip ended with metal pendants ( pensilia ).
The ornate Roman belt cingulum or balteus we offer here is best suited to depicting a legionary from the late 1st century. The riveted, rectangular decorative plates (approx. 8.5 x 5 cm), made of thin brass sheets, are alternately engraved with a human face motif and the famous Roman she-wolf or lupa motif suckling Romulus and Remus. In Roman mythology, the twins are considered the founders of Rome. The hinged buckle and movable pugio brackets are also made of brass.
The hipbelt is made of durable 3mm thick leather. The strap is pre-cut and adjustable to a variety of sizes. A leather cord is included for tying and attaching a dagger to the button-shaped pugio suspensions. The striped apron consists of four leather strips, each decorated with a pendant and eight brass medallions.
As an ideal accessory for Roman reenactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film, this beautiful Roman belt will make your transformation into a proud warrior simply perfect.
