A doublet, also called a gambeson, pourpoint or aketon, is almost indispensable for free and exhibition combat. The padded doublet was worn under plate armour in the late Middle Ages and is characterised by its short, close-fitting cut. It increased the comfort of wearing the knight's armour and was also able to absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury.

This ulfberth armour doublet is made of three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton cloth (canvas), a quilted layer of polyester and an inner cotton lining. The different quilting secures the padding and increases comfort. The doublet is closed with nests. In addition, ribbons with embroidered eyes are attached to the lap. And leg warmers or pieces of plate can be attached to the sleeves. The special cut of the extended armhole takes some getting used to at first, but is typical for the late 14th century. The high collar also has a special quality. It cuts and greatly increases the wearing comfort of the armour pieces on the neck.
