A gambeson, also called a doublet or aketon, is almost indispensable for free combat and exhibition combat. The gambeson was worn under chain and plate armor in the late Middle Ages. It increased the comfort of wearing the knight's armor and was also able to absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury.

This Ulfberth gambeson is made from three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton fabric (canvas), a quilted polyester layer, and a cotton inner lining. The vertical quilting secures the padding and increases comfort. The gambeson is secured with straps that are secured from the inside and therefore invisible. Slits at the sleeve hems and side seams enhance comfort. It can also be worn as a winter jacket.
