The blowgun has a long history worldwide. It is believed to have originated in Malaysia and reached the Philippines and even Japan via the Malaysian and Indonesian archipelagos. However, the blowgun was not exclusively present in Southeast Asia. It also appeared in the Western Hemisphere, from the jungles of South and Central America to the southeastern areas of what is now the United States. Blowguns were equipped with small stones or hardened clay pellets as ammunition and were used to hunt small animals and birds.
