Witcham Gravel Helmet – Roman Auxiliary Helmet in 1.2 mm Steel
Relive the great campaigns of the Roman Empire with this Witcham Gravel helmet , an accurate replica of a 1st century (ca. 50-75 AD) find unearthed near Witcham Gravel , Cambridgeshire, England, in 1870. This helmet is a unique example of the Roman Type B auxiliary cavalry helmets , now preserved in the British Museum, London.
Designed for auxiliary troops, this helmet combines the protection and distinctive style of Roman cavalry with unique details that make it stand out from other models of the period.
Made from 1.2mm polished steel and adorned with brass appliqués, this historic piece is distinguished by its hemispherical protrusions on the back and top, known as "bicycle bells" for their distinctive shape. It also features movable cheek flaps that can be secured with a strap (not included), and an optional yellow crest with a red-painted wooden frame, based on references in Arrian's Ars Tactica.
