This 12th-13th century Norman Spangenhelm is crafted from 16-gauge mild steel to provide both protection and historical detailing to your medieval gear. The riveted segmented construction features overlapping plates secured by bands of steel, a hallmark of Spangenhelm craftsmanship, and the distinctive face shield with vertical vents offers both breathability and formidable defense.
Inside, the helmet is equipped with a high-quality adjustable leather suspension liner and chin straps to ensure a comfortable and stable fit during combat or extended use. The polished finish gives it a clean look that stands out in any collection.
Historical Background: The Spangenhelm originated during the Migration Period and remained popular into the Early Middle Ages, especially among Norman, Viking, and Crusader warriors. Its segmented ("spangen") construction, meaning "strips," made it easier to make strong helmets by riveting metal plates together rather than forging a single dome.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, this design evolved to include enlarged, vented face shields, improving facial protection while preserving visibility and air circulation. This Spangenhelm reflects that transitional period when armor was becoming more closed, but had not yet evolved into the large, fully visored helmets of the 14th century.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Always dry your helmet thoroughly after use to prevent rust.
- Apply a light coat of oil to all steel surfaces before storing.
- Store in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Use a soft cloth for cleaning, avoiding harsh abrasives that may damage the finish.
USE:
Ideal for historical events, LARP battles, living history demonstrations, medieval fairs, or as a stunning display piece in your collection. Whether you're portraying a Norman knight or a Crusader foot soldier, this helmet will complete your ensemble with authentic style and reliable protection.
